Virtual Learning Environment with Integrated Library Systems for KAUST

Edutacs has successfully completed developing the Virtual learning environment (VLE) for King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). KAUST is an international, graduate-level research university in Saudi Arabia. The university opened in September 2009. At a greenfield stage, when the university infrastructure was being set up, KAUST decided to go in for a virtual learning environment (VLE). This VLE was integrated with its library systems and network for authentication and data exchange on student and course related information. KAUST chose Edutacs as a partner to implement this project.

Virtual learning Environment

Virtual Learning Environment for KAUST included the following components:

  • Learning Management System comprising
    • Content delivery system
    • Community engagement and collaboration system
    • Content repository
    • E-portfolios
  • Virtual Classroom
  • Online Authoring System

Application Development

Firstly, to make the user experience effective, Edutacs implemented the Application Integration to create the Virtual Learning Environment. Secondly, the Learning Management System became a core application for providing users the single-interface access to various components of the Virtual Learning Environment. In addition to developing Virtual Classroom and Online Authoring System and Library management system applications.

As a result this Learning Management System (LMS) included Content Delivery System, Community engagement and collaboration system and Content repository.

Software

Edutacs chose Blackboard as LMS solution for this project. Because Blackboard allows seamless integration of the other applications from third party through building blocks. Blackboard Building Blocks centers on an open platform architecture with a supportable framework for platform customization and integration. This has allowed KAUST to have the flexibility and choice for tools and systems while maintaining the integrity of the core system. Also the Building Blocks Program ensures cross-platform compatibility and reliable performance of the integrations across upgrades.

Building blocks are also at the core of the integration of VLE with KAUST’s network. Moreover, student Information System and LDAP Authentication system are the key integrations for this software.

Integration with University Network

Our team has completed a seamless integration to make the virtual learning environment an extension of the university network. As a result Edutacs implemented the following integrations:

  • Integration of Student and Course Information with VLE
  • Integration of Student (Patron) information with ILMS
  • Student Grade book Extract from VLE and Fine Information from ILMS
  • Single Sign On with Campus Portal and VLE & ILMS

Edutacs team has successfully completed this project in 2011 and proud to have it in our company portfolio. To know more about Virtual Learning Environment please contact us on info@edutacs.com or through our website contact form.
